A few months ago a very quiet and gentle year 6 boy came up to me in the corridor of the very first school I started working with. He asked me if I remembered him, which I did, and then he proceeded to tell me that he can now say hello in 15 languages and is teaching himself Norwegian, Swedish, Italian and a number of other languages including Cantonese so that he can talk to a boy in his class, who had arrived from Hong Kong. I was surprised at what happened next. He looked at me straight in the eyes and said "To quote Nelson Mandela...."If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart"." Needless to say that is all the reward I could ever ask for!
